How Does a Generator Transfer Switch Work?

How does a generator switch work? A generator transfer switch is a sophisticated term for a switch which will signal the generator to start if the power is interrupted. It can be used for your home, your RV as well as for industrial use.

How does a generator transfer switch work?

First of all, to answer that question we have to begin by asking ourselves what exactly is a generator switch. An automatic generator transfer switch is basically a sophisticated way of saying a switch which will signal the generator to start if the power is interrupted. It can be used for your home, your RV as well as for industrial use. In a nutshell, that’s how a generator transfer switch works.

The purpose of a transfer switch.

The purpose of a transfer switch is to connect your home, your office, or any building to a secondary power source, like a portable generator.

It is designed to enable the wiring system of the building to accept the full power of a portable generator. You can then go on and run multiple electrical appliances and devices in case or during a power outage. The transfer switch ensures that you can safely use back up power during a power outage without having to worry about back feeding the utility line.

Please note that a transfer switch is required by the NEC (National Electric Code) for any connection of power to a home.

Can I plug a generator directly into my home outlet?

Although it is theoretically possible to do, it is highly suggested to avoid doing this at any cost. You will effectively cause back-feed which could result in electrocutions in some case. You will greater the chances of damaging the generator itself and it could also catch fire. Can’t stress this enough, a transfer switch is the ONLY safe way to effectively power your home in case of a power outage.

In case of an emergency

When an emergency occurs, shutting off the main power source may not come to mind right away. With an automatic switch, the system makes it that you don’t have to worry about that at all.

What does a transfer for generators kit it look like?

Physically, you can see that it looks a little bit like a battery of some sort. This model above is the the Reliance Controls Corporation 6-circuit transfer switch kit for generators (7500 Watts). It’s not the one we personally bought but since it has a 5 star rating on amazon and also has the amazon’s choice badge, we feel confident that this model is is as good if not better as the one switch we use.

You probably guess it, it’s a manual transfer switch. Didn’t want to flood the page with ads but if you want to know what an automatic switch look like, click here.

So do you need an automatic transfer switch for your generator?

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve with it. If what you are looking for is something to kick in when the power goes down, the answer is yes. We strongly suggest to speak with a qualified electrician before making that decision and BEFORE trying to install this yourself.

If, on the other hand, you only want to use your generator to power stuff like your air conditioner for your RV or appliances in your garage, a manual switch will do. Since it also connects directly to the circuit box or your power panel, you will need to speak to the electrician anyway, which bring us to the question:

How much does it cost to install a transfer switch for your generator?

Generally speaking, a good electrician should be able to get the job done within three to four hours. This is assuming everything goes as plan. This is also assuming he doesn’t have to undo the mess you have created by trying to install it yourself. Don’t feel bad, been there done that.

The price may vary depending on what country or state you are in but a decent electrician should charge around $250 to $500 USD for a complete installation. No, it doesn’t cover the transfer switch price. Yeah, I know,  not ideal. Can you put a price on your home safety though? At least now you know.

A little demonstration

Now that you know how an automatic (and manual) switch works, that you know its price and you know you shouldn’t install it yourself, here is small YouTube video to show you how it actually works in a real life situation.

9. WEN 56380i 3800-Watt - Portable Fuel Powered Inverter Generator

Description

Remember when you had clean and quiet portable power? The WEN 3,800 Watt Inverter Generator produces clean energy free of voltage spikes and drops without making all of the noise of a regular generator. Generate up to 3800 surge watts and 3400 rated watts of power.

Our 212cc 4-stroke air-cooled OHV engine operates at an extremely quiet 57 decibels at quarter load, about as quiet as a window air conditioner or the average conversation. This limits its invasiveness while hunting, camping, tailgating and restoring back-up power. The WEN 3800W Inverter Generator is also equipped with fuel shutoff.

This feature turns off the flow of fuel, allowing the generator to use up the remaining fuel from the carburetor before automatically shutting down. This helps fight the build-up and blockages caused by stagnant fuel inside of the carburetor, minimizing maintenance while prolonging the unit’s lifespan.

Designed to mirror a pure sine wave, this generator limits total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics. The lightweight design along with the built-in wheels and folding handle make for easy portability while the ultra-efficient 2.2-gallon tank provides over 8.5 hours of half-load run time.

Our fully-packed panel comes equipped with two 3-prong 120V standard household receptacles, one AC 120V 30A NEMA TT-30R twist lock receptacle, one 12V DC receptacle, one 5V USB port and an easy-to-read digital fuel and load display. Maximize fuel economy by engaging the Eco-Mode switch. This feature allows the generator’s engine to automatically adjust its fuel consumption as items are plugged into and unplugged from the panel, preventing the usage of unnecessary gasoline.

The oil access cover makes for easy oil changes. Need more energy? Easily link up two WEN inverter generators using a WEN 56421 Parallel Connection Kit (sold separately) in order to share wattage between multiple units. Low-oil and low-fuel automatic shutdown, indication lights, and overload protection safeguard both your generator and your electronics from damage.

This included spark arrestor allows for legal use in national parks and campgrounds. And because this is a WEN Product, your inverter generator comes backed by a 2-year warranty, a nationwide network of skilled service technicians and a friendly customer helpline. Remember when your generator powered your electronics safely and quietly? Remember WEN.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

What generator size do I need for RV?

The short answer is it is relative to how much wattage you are planning to need for all your stuff to run.

Since the air conditioner is usually the biggest sucker, the consensus is that we generally settle on a model that will accommodate said air conditioner without any problem.

I found a very nice little chart on steadypower’s site to help you better gauge what size is the right size for you.

How many watts to run a RV air conditioner?

It can go anywhere from 1000 to 1300 watts for a 5000 BTU air conditioner up to 3200-3600 watts for a 15000 BTU to start up.

Once you get it running. It drops down to around 300 to 450 watts for a 5000 BTU air conditioner up to 1200-1750 watts for a 15000 BTU unit.

Every single unit we have selected above will be able to handle up to 15000 BTU. If you need a smaller portable one, check out our top 10 best portable generators for 2020 by clicking here.

Are propane generators quieter than gas powered?

Although there are some exceptions, propane powered generators are generally considered quieter than the gas generators. The big difference however is that currently, propane is half the price of gas for a gallon. It also is much cleaner and will have a positive effect on the future of your generator. Most of the models showed above will support both gas and propane.

Can I refuel a generator while it's running?

This is a big no no. Iv’e seen this a few times and you are literally playing with fire. Never add gas or propane to your generator while it’s running and I would add when it’s still hot as well.

I generally let it cool off for a good 15-20 min before adding new gas to it. If you think this is not necessary, a quick google search for RV generator explosion should change your mind.

Best Portable Generator for Cold Weather in 2021

What are the best portable generators for cold weather in 2020 ?

If you are in the market to buy the best portable generator for cold weather in 2020, you are in the right place.

I could tell you to stop reading right now and go buy the Jackery Explorer 500 and you would probably be good to go.

But before you do just that, I’m sure you want to compare the top generators out there and make a choice for yourself based on your needs.

Let me tell you how I winded up writing this top 10.

It all started when my wife and I bought an RV a few months ago.

Owning an RV also means owning a bunch of things like grills, pellet smokers, small blenders, etc.

It didn’t take long to realize we couldn’t power all those things without buying a proper generator.

One of our friends owns a hardware store so we figured it was a nice opportunity to borrow a few portable generators and test them.

We also relied on him for advice since he was the expert. To be honest he didn’t know as much as we wanted but at least he could lend us a few for us to test out.

Since we spent all this time (not that much time) and money (not that much money) testing these portable generators, I decided to create this top 10 to help you make the right choice to suit your needs. All of them are available on Amazon so it’s pretty much risk-free since you can return them for a full refund if you don’t like them.

A bit predictable but the 240W Jackery Portable Power Station Explorer 240 comes second in our top10. It’s exactly like the explorer 500 but less powerful. Its as reliable, as durable and even lighter than the explorer 500.

The particularity with this one is that its much quieter and much more eco-friendly. It’s lithium powered so it means no fumes, no smoke. 4. ROCKPALS 300W Portable Power Station

This one we hesitated for while before making it our number four. It could easily have been our number three spot. Its another lithium powered power station. It’s the 300W ROCKPALS portable power station. Compared to most similar power stations out there, Rockpals decided to upgrade the AC output to 300W continuous (600w surge max).

That kind of power is perfect as a backup battery pack but it’s also perfect as an emergency backup power for either your home, for travel purposes, for camping etc. Besides the ability to power small appliances like Iphones, Ipad, laptops, fans, tv, lights, it’s also powerful enough to power bigger things like mini car refrigerators, amplifiers etc.

It’s not fuel powered so it’s extremely quiet. You can recharge it three different ways. It also is solar ready if you already own solar panels or if you plan to make that kind of setup in the future.

5. AIPER Portable Power Station Flash 150 GENERATOR

This is the first model below the 200W in our top 10. Yes it is less powerful but it also comes at a very affordable price. In the hundred dollar range, this power station is an excellent backup, fast charge lithium powered unit. Just like the other models showed before, it’s built for the outdoor so it’s perfect for camping and other similar activities.

The Aiper Flash 150 features with 162W battery capacity to provide a larger power than the similar items. It can be a LED light for about 28 hours based on the amazon reviews and a mini fan for about 7 hours.

It’s a very nice unit for home use, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking etc. Of course, to be on the safe side, you should always try to charge things which are below 150W.

6. Honda HLS 290 - Portable Generator

You can’t talk battery without having to eventually talk about Honda. This is the HLS 290 portable lithium battery power station. It is once again a gas-free generator alternative. This is the second one we tested and frankly there’s nothing really bad we can say about this model.

Although it is now our personal favorite, it is considered to be one of the best non fuel powered backup battery station on the market. It’s not a a coincidence that it has the best rating of all the generator of it’s kind of amazon. It has been the amazon choice for quite some time now. Moreover, it’s price is quite decent for what it provides.

It feels like I am repeating myself but again it had been made for outdoor conditions so it’s pretty sturdy. It has all the usual plugs, including 2 USBs, 1 110V, 200W etc. It has a built in LED flashlight and the autonomy is comparable to the Jackerys.

Specifications:

7. Honda EU2200i 2200-Watt - Portable Generator

This has to be the sum um of outfoor generators as far as we are concerned. The only reason it’s not higher on the list is because of it’s price range. That being said, if you are looking for the ultimate power station, this it it. This is a 2200W 120V super quiet portable inverter generator.

Again, it has a perfect score on amazon with more than 200 comments. It can operate a variety of appliances, making it perfect for portable use at home, for camping hiking etc. Moreover, it can be used on job site and much more. It is fully powered by Honda so you know it’s reliable and durable.

Just like the Jackerys, you can get additional power by joining two unit with parallel cables for up to 4400w of raw power.

It is fuel powered. However, it’s exclusive eco-throttle system offers extremely great fuel efficiency. The best on the market. It can run up to almost 10 hours at full capacity. This makes for the ideal choice for overnight power or long-time applications.

8. Rockpals 250-Watt Portable Generator

Here is another of our personal favorite. The Rockpals 250W. You guessed it, another lithium powered rechargeable generator. If you went thru the other Rockpal specifications we listed before, it’s quite similar in terms of possibilities. Again built for camping so super strong materials and perfect for outdoor use.

By buying this model, you get the complete package of AC adapters, charging cables, DC to CIG socket adapter and a user guide. It is powered with the same sine wave inverted technology. It has a side fan for cooling which makes a little bit of noise but it’s noting compared to fuel powered units.

Furthermore, it is very comparable to the other model we have showed before. It is kind of its downfall as far as i’m concerned simply because there are other models at the same price offering more power and possibilities. Even then, it’s still an amazingly good product and just like the others, the people on amazon are loving it. It does have a $20 rebate since we started monitoring it.
